Fiona started a new job at a local café called âCoffee Aromaâ â a very original name. She used to work in a local shop and missed the social aspect of customer service. It was a quaint café, run by a family who prided themselves on local produce and excellent customer service. Fiona walked in with a CV looking for weekend work and it didnât take long to get a job. Fiona was good at interviews, her charisma and likeable personality shone through every time. Saturday morning was always the busiest. Hungover students, local elderly and the regular customers would always order the same breakfast, coffee and made up sandwiches. Fiona rotated between all parts of the job from cleaning tables, to preparing food. It wasnât difficult and it paid her some extra cash, her student loan never really went very far after her accommodation rent money came out - and then there was the cost of beer and pizza.
The door opened and in walked a regular customer â Jonny. He was mid-twenties, he had jet black hair swooped to one side and an overly cringeworthy approach to women âHey, didnât know you were on today. Always good to see you here though sweetie. Brightens my weekend!â
Fiona tried not to look so obviously grossed out âYes, I work here every weekend â but Iâm sure you know that really.â She smiled, attempting to be friendly âWhat can I get for you?â
âHot chocolate but no added sugar â Iâm sweet enough.â He winked.
Really?
Fiona made him his drink, took the £2.50 and falsely smiled. She had never felt so turned off by men. It made her question if they ever actually turned her on. The other young girls who worked in the café swooned after Jonny. Their little faces lighting up when he waltzed into the store with an ego bigger than his shiny forehead. She could not see the attraction. All she could see was Joss. She was potent. Sticking to her thoughts daily like a pleasant yet alarming odour.
Being at work gave Fiona time to think. The mind-numbing tasks of cleaning tables, smiling at customers and making sandwiches didnât take much thought, which left her space to reflect. It felt difficult to consider a sexuality she didnât know she identified with, but then it seemed like the most natural thought ever. She really did fancy her female teacher at primary school, and in secondary and now university. A recurring theme maybe. Before Max, Fiona had never really met anyone who was gay. She was from a small town. Sure there was the odd person on TV, or people in the limelight who were openly gay and proud, but there was never anyone close. Wendy had never really spoken about it, she didnât feel the need to. Not surprisingly, she also thought extensively about Joss, and what she should do next. These thoughts were taking over her life and Fiona knew she had to make a plan. This couldnât go on for three years.
